-
Receipt template
A simple A5 receipt for any sale or payment, with an optional VAT line.
-
Rent receipt
For landlords and agents: the rent period, amount, property and how it was paid.
-
Private car sale receipt
Seller and buyer details, the vehicle, the price and both signatures, on A4.
What a receipt should show
- a receipt number, so you can find it again
- the date of the payment
- your name or business name and contact details
- who paid
- what the payment was for
- the amount paid, and how (cash, card, bank transfer)
VAT registered? Your customers may need a VAT invoice to claim the VAT back. For sales of £250 or less, including VAT, HMRC allows a simpler VAT invoice. It must show your name, address and VAT number, the date, what was sold, and the total including VAT with the VAT rate. Add your VAT number under your address and fill in the VAT line. For bigger sales, use our VAT invoice template.
Rent receipts for landlords
A rent receipt gives you and your tenant a record of every payment, which helps if there's ever a dispute, especially when rent is paid in cash. Show the property, the period the rent covers, the amount, how it was paid and anything still owing.
Selling a car privately
A written receipt, signed by you and the buyer, records who bought the car, when, for how much and what you both agreed. Fill it in twice, or photocopy it, so you each keep a copy.
- Tell DVLA as soon as the car is sold. You can do it online on GOV.UK using the V5C log book. Your vehicle tax is then cancelled, and you get a refund for any full months left.
- The buyer has to tax the car before driving it away. Tax doesn't pass to the new owner.
- Describe the car honestly. A private seller doesn't have to guarantee its quality, but the car must be as described, you must own it, and it's a criminal offence to sell a car that isn't roadworthy. Writing "sold as seen" doesn't change that. Put any known faults in the "anything else agreed" box.

Make receipts in EdgeNote
EdgeNote, our notes app for Windows, has a receipt built in. It fills in your business details for you, and the total adds up as you type the items:
- Open EdgeNote and click Templates at the top of the panel.
- Choose the Sheets tab, then Receipt (A4).
- Type the items and prices. The total works itself out.
- Print it or save it as a PDF to email.

Questions
Are these receipt templates really free?
Yes. Download them, use them for your business or as a landlord, and give them to your customers. There's no sign-up, and nothing of ours on the receipts.
What's the difference between a receipt and an invoice?
An invoice asks for payment. A receipt confirms that a payment has been made. If a customer pays an invoice, you can give them a receipt to show it's settled.
Is there a receipt template for Word?
Yes, all three receipts come as Word files you can type into and change. The general receipt also comes as an Excel file that adds up the total for you.
Do I need to include VAT on a receipt?
Only if you're VAT registered. Leave the VAT rate at 0% if you're not. If you are, add your VAT number and the VAT rate, so the receipt can work as a simplified VAT invoice for sales of £250 or less.
How many copies of a car sale receipt do I need?
Two: one for you and one for the buyer, both signed. Fill in the PDF, print it twice and sign both copies.
Can I print two receipts on one sheet?
Yes. The blank general receipt and rent receipt PDFs have two A5 receipts on each A4 sheet. Print, then cut down the dashed line.
